USAA Datathon

March 21 – April 2, 2022

USAA and the McCoy College of Business are partnering to bring Texas State University the opportunity to compete in a team-based analytics data-hackathon, or datathon. This event will consist of developing a data-driven project, pitching the project in a presentation, executing on the best ideas with your team, and presenting your findings to a panel of industry experts.

Teams can participate in the Discovery/Pitch segment, the Build/Demo segment, or both. Data access via FTP, Python, and R are available with USAA provided guides but any data visualization tool such as Tableau or Alteryx, among others, is perfectly acceptable. Prizes awarded to multiple teams for the Discovery/Pitch and Build/Demo portions of the datathon, including $200 local restaurant gift cards per honorable mention team and $400 Amazon gift card to the overall winners (three teams). Interdisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged.

Discovery / Pitch
March 21-26

  • Project reveal on Monday, March 21.
  • Teams will plan during the week of March 21-26
  • Kickoff on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. (Zoom link*)
    • USAA will present the project and teams can begin planning their presentations
  • Presentations due by Saturday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
    • Submissions are by email to jaime.engl@usaa.com and must include team name and link to presentation video. 
      • Additional attachments are welcome. Only one submission required per team. 
    • Virtual judging from USAA from 3-6 p.m.
    • Announcement of Discovery / Pitch winning teams at 6 p.m. (Zoom link*)
    • Build / Demo portion revealed afterwards and published here on Monday, March 28
    • Build / Demo participants are welcome to view the virtual judging to see the reveal of Part 2

Build / Demo
March 26-April 2

  • Project reveal and additional instructions
  • Teams will plan during the week of March 26-April 2
  • Kickoff on Friday, April 1 at 5 p.m. (Zoom link*)
    • USAA will present the project and teams can begin planning their submissions and presentations
  • Teams collaborate with industry professionals on Saturday, April 2 starting at 8 a.m. in the Minifie Atrium (McCoy Hall 434)
    • Submissions due and presentations begin at 6 p.m. (Zoom link*) with winners announced immediately after presentations
