McCoy graduate students are required to successfully complete their academic degree plan with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in order to graduate.
But your graduate experience is not limited to the classroom; it is enhanced by honing soft skills, volunteering, and networking. For that reason all McCoy graduate students* are also required to complete Professional Development Units ("PDUs") in order to graduate. This is also referred to as a "co-curricular" requirement for graduation.
The first opportunity for students to earn PDUs is by attending the McCoy Graduate Bootcamp event prior to the start of their first semester. Incoming students are required to attend this event which is worth 6 PDUs.
Other PDU opportunities include guest speaker events, professional development seminars, the annual Business Etiquette Dinner, the Bobcat Build community service project, and other events and volunteer opportunities offered each semester. On a case-by-case basis, students may also petition to earn PDUs for other events they attend individually.
Professional Development Units are tracked via the Texas State TRACS system under the McCoy Graduate Student Association tab. Each PDU-eligible event will be advertised to McCoy graduate students and a sign-in sheet will be available to capture the names and ID numbers of students in attendance. If a student attends an event but does not sign in, credit will not be awarded.
Professional development events often involve industry professionals who are generously donating their time and expertise to provide value for McCoy graduate students. As such, students are expected to arrive prior to the start time. Students are expected to be professional, attentive, and participate. PDU credit may be denied at the discretion of the McCoy Graduate Programs staff if a student is tardy or otherwise not participating in the session. Additional information can be found in the McCoy student handbook.
Attendance Policy: McCoy graduate students are expected to honor their commitments. When you RSVP for a Professional Development event we expect you to be there. If a student needs to cancel an RSVP, it must be done via Texas State email to the event contact (usually a member of the McCoy Graduate Team) at least 24 hours prior to the event. Students who RSVP and then no-show, or cancel less than 24 hours prior without extenuating circumstances will not earn PDU credit for the event, and will also lose PDU credit equal to the amount offered for that event.
Example: No-showing or late cancellation for an event worth 2 PDUs means 2 PDUs will be deducted from your current total.
While McCoy graduate staff track PDUs, it is the ultimate responsibility of the graduate student to ensure they meet the requirement prior to graduation.
