Application Process

There is a two step process for applying for admission to any of our graduate programs. The first step is to complete the requirements of the Texas State University Graduate College as described on the Graduate College website. These requirements include:

  • An online graduate application and associated fee (ApplyTexas)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended
  • Your official Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores

** PLEASE NOTE THAT EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2013 WE WILL ACCEPT EITHER THE GMAT OR GRE EXAM FOR GRADUATE APPLICATIONS**

The steps listed above are required by the Texas State University Graduate College. In addition to those requirements the McCoy Graduate College of Business requires that all applicants also submit the following:

  • Two letters of recommendation from persons best able to assess your ability to succeed in graduate school. Please use the standard McCoy College recommendation form. The person who writes a recommendation letter should be provided with a copy of the McCoy College recommendation form (digitally or physically) and a self-addressed and stamped envelope so the recommendations can be returned to the applicant to be included in the application package. (Note: Persons applying for the special five-year BBA/MAcy program are not required to submit letters of recommendation)
  • Responses to two specific essay questions for the term for which you are applying. Topics for spring, summer or fall can be found by clicking those links.
  • A current, detailed resume describing work experience, extracurricular and community activities, honors and achievements.
  • A letter providing additional information that was not required that you would like the admissions committee to consider in its deliberation. This component of your application packet is optional and serves essentially as a cover letter.

As an applicant, it is your responsibility to complete the Graduate College requirements and secure all of the McCoy College application materials. Once you have assembled all of the items listed above, everything should be sent or hand-delivered to:

The Graduate College
Texas State University - San Marcos
601 University Drive
280 J.C. Kellam Administration Building
San Marcos, TX 78666

A candidate's application packet will be classified as incomplete until all required documents have been submitted to the University. The McCoy College Graduate Admissions Review Committee will review complete application packets and decide, based on qualifications, who will be admitted to the programs. Incomplete packets will not be reviewed by the committees.

As noted on the Texas State University Graduate College Web site, all applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university. Admission to all graduate business degree programs is competitive and designed to identify those applicants who have the ability, interest, and maturity to manage the rigors of the programs as well as potential for future professional growth. The admissions committee will carefully consider all aspects of an applicant's professional and academic background. Specific attention will be given to quantitative measure such as undergraduate GPA and scores on all components of the standardized Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or Gradaute Record Examinations (GRE).

GMAT, GRE and GPA

All McCoy graduate business programs require an official Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score to be submitted prior to admission consideration. A competitive GMAT score is preferred. The Admissions Committee will be looking for applicants with strong academic performance throughout their undergraduate experience and competitive scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) exam may be substituted for the GMAT requirement. GRE scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey, to the Texas State Graduate College. The college code for Texas State is 006667. The Educational Testing Service can be contacted at www.ets.org/gre. Texas State students are only required to take the General Test.

While a specific minimum GPA or GMAT/GRE score is not required, both are very important and are indicators of an applicant's potential success in graduate business studies. The admissions committee will look for applicants with strong academic performance throughout their undergraduate experience. Competitive scores on the GMAT or GRE are required. Also very important to the admissions committee are qualitative elements such as letters of recommendation, quality of written essays, relevant work experience, source and major area of undergraduate degree(s), extracurricular and community activities, honors and achievements. For more information about GMAT/GRE and GPA as they relate to admission into the graduate programs, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Financial Assistance

There are several financial aid opportunities available to qualified students. Of significant importance are a limited number of competitive McCoy Fellowships that are awarded at $1500 or $2500 per semester depending upon the qualifications of the applicant.
